"MasterPiece Megatron"

Posted by MindChamber Jan. 16, 2008 @ 10:15 PM EST

Aight before I get any hassles this is about a transformer figure, yea thats right. Imma talk about Toys,

so if that ain't your bag, go complain to somebody else about it.

Now that thats out of the way... I wanna talk about the Megatron Figure I got today ^_^
Before Megatron became what he is today,a walking pile of metal scrap. He actually transformed into something recognizable . That would be the Walter P38 handgun. Now, I know that isnt much of an improvement with what we have now, but thats the Megatron I grew up with.
There has been transformer lines coming from many companies outside of Hasbro and Takara, even more so than ever now that the movie has been a big hit.
Before the movie though, there was a transformer line by the company "Tomy". Their Goal is to produce very detailed versions of the G1 transformers, that not only could transform, but are Show Accurate, especially in robot mode.
Some of you probably have the 25th anniversary Optimus Prime, which is the MasterPiece Prime, that was brought over. Since Optimus, there has been MP Starscream and MP Megatron. Starscream was a walmart exclusive which I couldn't find anywhere, but I was lucky enough to get one for Christmas! (Yay!)
MP Megatron is another matter. Since hes based off the orginal Megatron that was a gun, the probability of him getting brought over is next to none. Whats worse is Importers were charging triple the amount to add the orange cap on the barrel (US specs) in order to import him.
Well, my luck finally came in when I was able to snipe one off ebay, unmoded, for a fraction of the importers price!
He's an awesome figure. Hes totally huge, (He needed to be Primes Size or bigger) and has tons of little details. Things that stand out are his articulation, like his individuals fingers, and ability to turn the neck and legs, as well as a cool little light within the arm cannon.

Making it show accurate does have its draw backs. For starters, he doesn't have the mass as a gun, like he does in robot form. Even though they doubled the size of the gun, he still was stretched apart to the limits. For example his legs were beefed up by having a section of the handle pulled out at the calf, as well as having the trigger ring folded inside of the leg. The exact thing was done to his shoulders as well. On Top of this the arm and leg joints are hidden in the handle and hammer section of the gun, so in robot mode these parts are pulled out, leaving these sections even more hollow.

Gripes aside its still an ambitious attempt at making something as impossible as Cartoon megatron transform perfectly into his gun mode and back.

and yes thats the original megatron in gun mode in the inset picture.

Oh man, That's beautiful, why didn't they start the series off like this in the first place.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 10:23 PM Imacow says:

Wait, so in the original show, Megatron transformed into a giant handgun?

Who would shoot this said gun?

Anyways, yeah, the legs and shoulders look kinda funky, but the gun form looks pretty cool.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 10:29 PM MindChamber responds:

Hehe yeah. the show was pretty silly with it actually. Megs would turn into a handgun, and someone else would fire it, like Starscream or soundwave. whats funny is how it made no sense with scale. because one time spike ran up and shot megatron in gun mode. He had to hold the gun up with one arm like a boozooka and pull the trigger with the other :-p

Go rob Walmart with it. Serves Them for not having your transformers in stock.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 10:26 PM Tystarr says:

Prtty cool. I'm always amazed how these artists can re create a cartoon into reality either through movies or toys.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 10:28 PM squeakytoad says:

I suppose a toy gun would be fun to play with than other miscellaneous items they've tried.
However, it can't be too useful to Megatron himself. I mean, a gun doesn't really have the greatest mobility. He'd kind of also need someone to pull the trigger (unless he was capable of doing so himself- I don't know, I've only seen a few episodes of the original show).

Neat looking toy.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 10:52 PM Vert says:

Nothing to say about Megatron (except that I'm highly impressed at the gun mode), but I'm suprised you haven't posted about (http://kotaku.com/344073/another-game spot-reviewer-decides-to-leave) this and (http://kotaku.com/340957/longtime-gam espot-reviewer-leaves-cites-gerstmann -firing) this. I know, I know, it's still not a smoking gun, but all the circumstancial evidence is adding up so goddam fast that I'm doubting anyone could still belive in CNet's innonce (so to speak).

Also, could I possibly bother you into reviewing my latest flash submission? I'd deeply appreciate the input of a veteran flash artist like yourself before I started other flash projects. Link: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view /419203 Thanks in any case.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 11:23 PM MindChamber responds:

Well I I knew that was gonna happen, but for the most part I got alot of replies from people didn't believe it. so I just kept quiet about it and now people are seeing the truth for themselves.

Megatron turning into a giant handgun that shoots with corner lazer sound effects was one of my favorite things on the old transformers.
That is how I will always remember him.
I even tried to find a short .gif animation of megatron changing into gunmode from the old show, but i couldn't find one. I fail.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 10:54 PM SuperDeagle says:

As hard as it is to believe I use to watch the G1 Transformers when I was like 4-7.

Jan. 16, 2008 | 10:55 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

videotape how it transforms. I need to see it to believe it.

also

YOU FAIL ME YET AGAIN, STARSCREAM

Jan. 17, 2008 | 12:07 AM MindChamber responds:

hehe maybe a timelapse? because turning him into a gun took about 35 minutes :(

lol imagine if a kid brought that to school and he transformed it into a gun... hed be runign around with a gun screaming "TRANSFORMERS RETARDS IN DISGUISE!!"
the teachers would be like "waaaah?" That does sorta look like a real gun...i can bet i can kill a man with it...

Jan. 16, 2008 | 11:36 PM physco-pickle says:

Holy shit, I'm so fucking jealous. Even though it would have been better if it were Star Scream. I fucking love him :3

Jan. 17, 2008 | 12:04 AM MindChamber responds:

should I post pics of him as well? I have him in Jet mod and it took forever haha

Jan. 17, 2008 | 12:08 AM The-Donkey says:

Just wondering, but with this recent addition, how many transformers do you have?

Jan. 17, 2008 | 2:51 AM Erreip199 says:

wait y is there 2 guns? u got 2 diff sized megatrons?

Jan. 17, 2008 | 2:53 AM JakBaronKing says:

Wow...I did not know that Megatron actually turns into a "real - looking" gun! You've got a rare find!

If you get a certificate of authenticity from Hasbro...hold on to it for the next 50 years...you could sell it for a Hefty price to a museum or something.

How much did it cost you? I'll bet it was expensive.

What's the little hand gun? Is that part of the model?

Jan. 17, 2008 | 3:46 AM MindChamber responds:

the smaller gun is actually an orginal megtron from the 80s. the bigger one is the new one I just got, the "masterpiece" version

Jan. 17, 2008 | 3:40 AM RubberNinja says:

Yeah, I loved how stupid that was.

Jan. 17, 2008 | 3:43 AM lenkobiscuit says:

My cousin had that ages ago. He nearly snapped his fingers off trying to transform the bastard.

Jan. 17, 2008 | 4:49 AM KlausT says:

Well a long time ago, Transformers were my favorite toys. I did't watch the movie so I might be a bit out of date.

The bigger question is: where the heck does he store his amonition?
I mean ... he needs battelship rounds like ... uhm ... "USS Missouri-Size".
And who has got an eye big enough to look through this giant scope?

Anyway, whats that smaller gun in compare to Megatron shown on the picture?
Is this one of the smaller ones that come with thier "Master"?

Jan. 17, 2008 | 5:26 AM AutobotLock says:

The fact you got one a few days after me makes me happy. It's one of the most complicated transformations i've ever come across, and not that forgiving. But that just goes with Megatrons character when you think about it. Other than that it's still made of pure awesome, and he's delightfully twatting Masterpiece Prime as we speak.

Jan. 17, 2008 | 10:19 AM MindChamber responds:

haha I just set up a face off on my desk yesterday. Prime hiding behind a group of autobots tho :-p

Jan. 17, 2008 | 7:38 AM Rucklo says:

Thats fucking awesome! I always wanted an Optimus Prime as simiiliar as from the series... Don't know why, but there was something about the shape of his head htat appealed me as something really tough and strong about him. I did get a version of him, but I think it was the second edition... a little more plastic and he was actually possible to transform into one large and one small Prime. I remember I didn't think it lived up to my expectations to 100%, but still, it was cool enough for me, and we had loads of fun hours with lots of <3. :)

Dare I ask how much you paid for this Megatron edition?

Jan. 17, 2008 | 9:58 AM MindChamber responds:

when I was at comic con, they had one for sale for 300 bucks. I died alil that day

I sniped this on ebay for like 93 ^_^

Jan. 17, 2008 | 9:31 AM Mosaab says:

That's awesome. I'd buy it.

Jan. 17, 2008 | 3:29 PM WorkingClassHero says:

dont you know that transformers are for pussies!

why dont you be a real man, and get some good action figures, like power rangers.
(joke)

Jan. 17, 2008 | 4:35 PM chriswc30 says:

Briefly, thanks a bunch for actually leaving a review! That means a lot from to a aspiring flash artist. Cheers!

Jan. 17, 2008 | 9:56 PM SonicFoxStrk says:

wow can't believe you found one of those dude ^^ nice

Jan. 18, 2008 | 12:48 AM Luxury-Yacht says:

How much does this cost, retail?
Not that I want to buy it, I just want to know how much the makers expect back after pulling this feat off.

Jan. 18, 2008 | 2:02 AM ImaginationCreations says:

man that is friggin sick dude o.o any idea how much that cost XD?

Jan. 18, 2008 | 5:03 AM WolfBlitz2 says:

I reckon there'll be a sequel for the most recent transformers movie
I heard that megatron figure shots real pellets in gun mode or something, is that true?

Jan. 18, 2008 | 12:22 PM MindChamber responds:

Ive heard of this to, tho I never see one. it is possible tho since the barrel and chest of the original megs is mostly empty.

Jan. 18, 2008 | 12:14 PM Edd360 says:

i want one. Seriously.

Jan. 18, 2008 | 5:29 PM steph2568 says:

Jan. 19, 2008 | 12:14 AM Kurofelis says:

That's fucking awesome.

If only it could fire.

Jan. 19, 2008 | 5:25 AM WolfBlitz2 says:

I think it was a Japanese version of megatron
ah.... japan....
nothing like anime, nitendo, ninjas and Aum Shinrikyo

Jan. 19, 2008 | 9:17 PM tomylee says:

Dude i always loved your animations and stuff.
Is that the key that allows flash users to bring good FBF animations?
Is the key to life playing with megatrons?

Actually, it seems to be a very good toy. Do you think i can find one on eBay. And how much did you pay for it?

lol, MindChamberz for the world :D

Jan. 20, 2008 | 12:10 AM Sarai says:

I have some toys still, but not really any I've made beyond putting together stuff from a kit. That's impressive you doing it yourself, but the gun(s) do scare me.

Take care!

Jan. 20, 2008 | 11:53 AM Daemon-32 says:

Agreeing with most people who've posted: Starscream is FAR better! He transforms into a JET.. With missiles and everything. Megaton turns into a GUN? How he became deception leader, I'll never know!

He's better when he gets turned into Galvitron in the Movie.. (Not the recent movie, but the old one. The DECENT one!)

UNICRON RULES ALL THO!!!!!

Jan. 21, 2008 | 4:22 AM JakBaronKing says:

Seriously! that is a cool looking Transformer! I can see why they would stop manufacturing it though. Cause it really does look like a real gun! You could fool anybody with that! lol

Even the smaller one looks deadly.

That's not bad...I read that you picked it up for 93 dollars....that's pretty fair considering how cool it is.

Don't you have a Optimus Prime one? I'll bet you do. Is it true he was origionally a Fire Truck? Not a Semi.

What do you think of the New Transformers Animated Series on Cartoonnetwork? It's by the animators of Teen Titans so it's very "anime-ish"

I think it's just "alright".

Bumble-Bee's still a dork but he has cool electric powers!

They even brought back the Dino-Bots.

Jan. 22, 2008 | 10:02 AM Deathzone says:

wow, thats fuckin beastie i'm happy 4 u but it's just that mindchamber... i don't think it's mother approved you'll put an eye out! ahh fuck it i'd go on a stick-up spree with it hehe if only it didn't take 35 min.s to make it transform lmao! imagine playing a prank on someone and then police happen to see it hehe mmm wait officer it's just a toy watch umm give me an half hour i swear it's a toy!

Jan. 22, 2008 | 7:42 PM Hammi says:

Oh shoot! I thought that toy was only a joke. Wickeeeeed. Im a long time fan of Transformers. My lil bro just got into it xP I hated Michael Bays movie though, there was so much i couldnt recognize. Like they erased all the good stuffs away that kept the original cartoons alive. Its just not the same as it was back in the old days, the good old days. Plus, i was extremely unsatisfied with Megatrons look. I HATED IT. BAH. I curse Swedish fish on the guy who redesigned him.

Starscream is so memorable... *sigh*

*Transformers old tune in my head*

Jan. 22, 2008 | 10:29 PM Saprophyte says:

That is... Undeniably fucking awesome. I love transformers, and I'm impressed at the detail of this, but I haven't ever gone to those lengths. I grew up partially with many of Megatron's different (and if not changing) looks, but the old handgun was most memorable to me. I never knew the model or the details on it, but it is still fresh in my memory. Is this a new model of Megtron (25th anniversary???)? Or one of the old ones? And on top of that, how much did you pay for the little guy?

Jan. 24, 2008 | 4:53 AM The-Dark-Reviewer says:

no, uh wait, Magatron transforms into a gun, flies up into the air and is caught hold of by another Decepticon and that robot, whoever gets hold of it shoots it! Right?
Not as bad as the movie, LMAO.

The movie is when Megatron transforms into a Cybertronian Jet PLane or something.

Jan. 24, 2008 | 5:29 PM AniGen says:

i once prank called this company with a voice changer on and screamed "I AM OPTIMUS PRIME" into the microphone

that has nothing to do with this really but yeah

Feb. 7, 2008 | 2:00 PM ViolentAJ says:

Yeah. I was waiting for Megatron to transform into a gun instead of the odd aircraft.

Also, Starscream should have been an F-15 instead of an F-22...

Oh well, it was still a good movie.
